Red Priest is a quartet of British period-instrument players – recorder (Piers Adams, who writes the programme notes), violin, cello and harpsichord – who play with daring and breathtaking virtuosity. They have arranged theatre and concerto pieces of comparable imaginative scope, adding finally an improvisation on ‘La Folia’. Not even with Harnoncourt or Il Giardino Armonico will you find so extreme a characterisation of Vivaldi’s ‘La Notte’, with its dreams and bizarre allegros, but it works brilliantly. And so does the rest of the programme, in turn vividly engineered. Not to be missed!
